**Instagram does not give you a download button on someone else’s Reel.** The search fills with paste boxes. Those pages take the link through someone else’s server. A **browser extension** is the other common path.

**Paste the video page you opened, not a profile or Explore.**

- A **Reel** looks like `instagram.com/reel/` plus a short code. `instagram.com/reels/` with the same code is the same video.
- A **feed video** looks like `instagram.com/p/` plus a short code.
- A **TV** link looks like `instagram.com/tv/` plus a short code. That is a leftover path for longer videos. It is still one video.

Copy from **Share** or the ⋯ menu on that Reel or post. Mobile `m.instagram.com` links to the same video are fine. Do not paste a profile, Explore, or a search page. Those are not one video. The app will say so.

People who typed **download instagram reel** still paste that Reel URL. The job is the same: one video, as MP4, in a folder.

<h2 id="photo-posts-and-carousels">Photo posts and carousels</h2>

**A photo-only post is not this job.** `/p/` is used for stills and for video. If inspect cannot load a video, you pasted a picture. There is nothing to save as MP4.

A carousel can mix photos and a clip. Paste the post only when that page is a video you can play. KeepCopy does not offer a slide picker. It will not invent a video from stills.

Stories are a different surface. They are not a shipped control. Do not paste an `instagram.com/stories/` link and expect a file.

<h2 id="instagram-often-asks-you-to-sign-in">Instagram often asks you to sign in</h2>

**Instagram challenges downloads more often than a public YouTube watch link.** A Reel can play in a signed-in browser and still refuse an anonymous request. That is the usual Instagram trap, not a broken paste.

Start with **Don’t use cookies**. If inspect fails, or the queue title is **sign in required**, open **Site access**. Choose cookies from Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Firefox, or Safari, or a `cookies.txt` file. Then retry.

Cookies stay on this computer. They go only to **yt-dlp** for that challenged download. They reuse a session you already have. They do not create an account with us and they do not unlock a private account you cannot already open.

<h2 id="how-to-do-instagram-to-mp4-in-keepcopy">How to do Instagram to MP4 in KeepCopy</h2>

**Paste the Instagram link, pick an MP4 preset, set the folder, and queue the job.** You never type a format code.

### Step 1: Open KeepCopy

Launch KeepCopy on macOS, Windows, or Linux. First run installs and verifies the official **yt-dlp** release and **ffmpeg** on this computer. You do not hunt a **package manager**.

### Step 2: Paste the Instagram URL

Drop in the Reel, `/p/`, or `/tv/` link. The app inspects it on this computer before anything is saved. You should see that video’s title.

### Step 3: Pick 720p, 1080p, or 4K MP4

Choose **720p MP4**, **1080p MP4**, **4K MP4**, or **best available** when the source has them. Prefer **1080p** or **4K** when you want one file with sound. Hosts often split picture and audio; ffmpeg joins them here.

### Step 4: Save it to a folder

In Settings, set **Save files to** to a folder on this computer. The queue shows progress, cancel, and retry. When it finishes, **Show folder** reveals the video.

If Instagram challenged the inspect, open **More options** and set **Site access** before you queue the job.

<h2 id="what-this-will-not-do">What this will not do</h2>

**KeepCopy cannot restore a Reel Instagram already took down.** If the page is gone, inspect has nothing to load.

**It will not download Stories.** This page is a Reel, a video post, or a TV link you can open as a page.

**It will not turn a photo post into a video.** A still has no MP4 stream.

**It will not unmute audio Instagram already muted.** If the host silenced the clip, the saved file keeps that mute.

This is not an Instagram browser, a chat export, or a website that fetches the video for you.
