How to download an X video as MP4

You searched download X video — or twitter to mp4, or an X video downloader. The usual result is a converter you found in search: paste a post, wait on a second page, and still may not know who saw the URL.

X does not give you a save button on someone else’s clip. Right-click often fails because the player streams HLS chunks, not one file. A browser extension or a copied command line snippet is the other common path.

Why download-X-video usually means a converter

There is no download control on someone else’s X post. Search fills with paste boxes. Those pages take the link through someone else’s server.

The player is the other trap. X often sends the clip as small HLS pieces while you watch. A right-click “save video” either misses the file or grabs one chunk. That is why people type X to MP4 and land on a converter, or paste a command they do not want to keep.

KeepCopy stays a desktop video downloader. This page is only the X-as-MP4 job. Your computer talks to X. We do not see the URL. There is no account with us and no crash reporting.

That is the point of a local save: the video lands in a folder you choose, as offline local media, not in a tab you have to trust.

The /status/ test

Paste the exact post that contains native video, not a profile or a feed.

• An X URL looks like x.com/ plus the account, then /status/ and a long id.
• A twitter.com URL with the same /status/ id is the same post.
• A share link looks like t.co/ plus a short code. The app follows it to that /status/ page.

Copy from Share → Copy link on the post, or from the address bar once the post is open on its own page. Mobile links to the same /status/ id are fine.

Do not paste a profile, Home, Search, a Community home, or a list. Those are not one video. The app will say so.

People who typed download twitter video still paste that /status/ URL. The job is the same: one native clip, as MP4, in a folder.

A list of videos is still select-then-save — Download selected videos from a playlist.

Native video vs a link preview

The video has to play on that /status/ page, not only as a card.

A post can quote or preview a YouTube, TikTok, or other host. That card is a link. Inspecting the X URL will not pull the other site’s file. Paste the host page you actually want — YouTube to MP4 or TikTok to MP4 when that is the real source.

If the post has native video and a link, paste the /status/ URL for the X clip. If inspect cannot load a video, you pasted a text post, a still, or a preview.

GIF loops stay silent

A GIF-style loop on X is already a silent video. X stores those as short MP4s with no soundtrack. The saved file stays silent.

KeepCopy will not invent audio for a loop. It will not turn the clip into an animated GIF. If you wanted sound, you need a post that already has it.

Protected posts and cookies

A public /status/ video usually downloads without cookies. Start with Don’t use cookies.

Protected accounts and some limited posts can play in a signed-in browser and still challenge the download. If inspect fails, or the queue title is sign in required, open Site access. Choose cookies from Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Firefox, or Safari, or a cookies.txt file. Then retry.

Cookies stay on this computer. They go only to yt-dlp for that challenged download. They reuse a session you already have. They do not create an account with us and they do not unlock a post X will not serve you.

How to download an X video in KeepCopy

Paste the /status/ link, pick an MP4 preset, set the folder, and queue the job. You never type a format code.

Step 1: Open KeepCopy

Launch KeepCopy on macOS, Windows, or Linux. First run installs and verifies the official yt-dlp release and ffmpeg on this computer. You do not hunt a package manager.

Step 2: Paste the /status/ URL

Drop in the x.com or twitter.com /status/ link, or the t.co share. The app inspects it on this computer before anything is saved. You should see that post’s title.

Step 3: Pick 720p, 1080p, or 4K MP4

Step 4: Save it to a folder

In Settings, set Save files to to a folder on this computer. The queue shows progress, cancel, and retry. When it finishes, Show folder reveals the video.

If X challenged the inspect, open More options and set Site access before you queue the job.

Save the video. Paste an X /status/ link in KeepCopy.

What this will not do

KeepCopy cannot restore a post X already took down. If the page is gone, inspect has nothing to load.

It will not pull a YouTube or TikTok file from a preview card. Paste that host’s URL instead.

It will not invent audio for a GIF-style loop. Those posts are already silent.

It will not record a live broadcast. This page is a /status/ post you can already open.

It will not unmute audio X already muted. If the host silenced the clip, the saved file keeps that mute.

This is not an X browser, a thread exporter, or a website that fetches the video for you.

If you wanted audio only

Which X URL do I paste?

Paste the /status/ page that plays native video. x.com, twitter.com, and t.co share links to that same post are fine. Not a profile, Home, Search, or a post that only previews a video hosted elsewhere.

What if the post only previews a YouTube or TikTok video?

That card is a link, not an X video. Paste the host page you actually want. This job is native video on the /status/ page.

Is KeepCopy a website that converts the video?
