Download video as MP3 on the desktop

Download video as mp3 desktop: pick Podcast, save audio MP3 or M4A with artwork to a folder on this computer. Extract audio from a web video locally.

You wanted the soundtrack. The usual path saved a video — extra file, extra space, and no artwork on the audio you actually play.

A converter you found in search takes the same link and hops through someone else’s page. A copied command asks for a format code just to keep the sound.

KeepCopy is the local desktop video downloader for that job. To download video as MP3 on the desktop, open the Podcast recipe, pick audio MP3 or audio M4A, and save the soundtrack to a folder on this computer.

No cloud hop. No package manager. Artwork and tags go in the file when you want them.

You paste a link. You keep the soundtrack. You do not strip a file you already have.

Extract audio from a web video here means save audio from that pasted URL — a talk, a podcast, a track — not a dedicated “remove soundtrack” product. KeepCopy does not open a video already on disk and peel the sound out.

The host still has the source. The app inspects the link on this computer, then writes audio MP3 or audio M4A to the folder you pick.

How to download video as MP3 on the desktop

Paste the link, choose Podcast or an audio-only label, pick a folder, and queue the download. The decisions stay on screen before anything is saved.

Step 1: Open KeepCopy

Launch KeepCopy on macOS, Windows, or Linux. On first launch, the app installs and verifies the official yt-dlp release and a bundled ffmpeg on this computer.

You do not hunt a package manager or paste an install command. The engine is part of first run.

Copy the URL from your browser and paste it into KeepCopy. The app inspects the link on this computer before download, so you see the title and the options that actually apply.

If you pasted a playlist URL instead, inspect it and select the entries you want. The app does not silently grab every item.

Step 3: Choose Podcast or an audio-only label

Open the Podcast recipe when you want the soundtrack path. It is the shortcut for Audio MP3 with artwork and tags.

Or pick a quality directly: Audio only (MP3) or Audio only (M4A). Those labels sit in the same list as 720p MP4, 1080p MP4, 4K MP4, and best available. The list shrinks to what that source offers.

You do not type a format code to keep the sound.

Step 4: Pick a folder and start the queue

Choose a folder on this computer, then add the job to the queue. Progress, cancel, retry, and reveal-in-folder live there.

When the download finishes, the audio is in the place you picked — offline local media, not a library inside the app. Play it in whatever player you already use.

Podcast vs picking audio yourself

Podcast is the shortcut for soundtrack plus artwork and tags. It points at audio MP3, turns on Embed thumbnail and Embed metadata, and leaves captions off.

You can still open More options after choosing the recipe. The controls stay visible. Nothing is a hidden second product.

MP3 or M4A

Pick the container you will actually play. Both labels drop the picture.

  • Audio only (MP3) — the Podcast default. Ordinary players and phones expect it.
  • Audio only (M4A) — when you want that container instead of MP3.

One post covers both on purpose. They are the same picker with different rows. You are not choosing a second product.

If the source has more than one soundtrack, Audio language can appear after inspect. Pick (original) or a listed language for this audio-only job. That control will not invent a voice the host never offered. A video you meant to watch with the wrong dub is a different page: Downloaded video has auto-dubbed audio.

Artwork and tags

Podcast writes cover art and title tags into the audio file. That is the agitation this recipe is for: a soundtrack you can play without staring at a generic filename.

In More options, under Extras:

  • Embed metadata — write title and channel tags into the file so Music, Photos, and file browsers show the right info.
  • Embed thumbnail — store the cover image inside the media file. The UI calls this out as best for podcasts and audio.
  • Save thumbnail file — keep a separate image next to the download when you want a sidecar for an archive.

Podcast turns the first two on. You can change them. Save thumbnail file stays off unless you flip it.

KeepCopy is not a media library. The tags live in the file. Your player reads them.

Why skip a web converter for audio

A converter site is another hop for sound you already meant to keep locally.

You paste the link, wait on a second page, and may not know where the work happened. Browser extensions add another trust surface for the same soundtrack.

KeepCopy is local-first. A pasted URL goes from this computer to the video host — never through our servers. The desktop app sends no telemetry and does not create an account.

Where the audio lands

You choose the folder. The app writes there.

There is no KeepCopy account page and no temporary cloud workspace. The queue is the working surface: progress, cancel, retry, reveal in folder, remove.

When the job completes, you have ordinary audio on disk. Play it in whatever player you already use.

Settings can change download defaults and optional yt-dlp update checks. Those checks look for a newer official yt-dlp release on GitHub. You can turn them off. They never include the URLs you paste.

Playlists of talks

A playlist URL is still select-then-save. Inspect the list, pick the entries you want, and queue those.

The app does not silently download every item in one run. If you want three talks from a list of forty, you pick those three. The full walkthrough is Download selected videos from a playlist.

Each selected entry can use Podcast or the same audio-only labels. The queue handles more than one job honestly — as jobs you started, not as a silent dump.

If you wanted the picture

Audio-only labels drop the picture on purpose. They will not fix a mute video you meant to watch.

If the picture moves and there is no audio, the host sent video and sound as separate streams and they were not joined. That diagnostic is Downloaded MP4 no audio. Paste the link again and pick 1080p MP4 or 4K MP4 when they appear.

If the file plays but the voice is the wrong language, stay on the video presets and pick Audio language. Do not switch to Podcast to “fix” a dub.

Micro-FAQ

Does Podcast strip audio from a file I already have?

No. Paste a video link. KeepCopy saves audio from that source. It does not strip a soundtrack from a file already on disk.

Should I pick MP3 or M4A?

Podcast targets audio MP3. Pick Audio only (M4A) when you want that container instead. Both are soundtrack-only labels in the same list.

Where does the audio go?

You choose a folder on this computer. The queue can reveal the finished audio there when the download completes.

Will this fix a mute video I meant to watch?

No. Audio-only labels drop the picture on purpose. A mute MP4 is a join problem — see the no-audio diagnostic.
